What is Menstrual Pain?

Primary dysmenorrhea is more common in women under the age of 30 and women with heavy periods. The pain is usually worse in women under the age of 20.

Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) are throbbing or cramping pains in the lower abdomen. Many women have menstrual cramps just before and during their menstrual periods.

For some women, the discomfort is merely annoying. For others, menstrual cramps can be severe enough to interfere with everyday activities for a few days every month.

In 2014, Always launched a new leg of its epic battle to make sure that girls everywhere keep their confidence through puberty and beyond by tackling the societal limitations that stand in their way.

Inspired by the brand, I want to convey the same spirit to all the women that they are always strong and powerful.

moon.

The logotype is “moon” with a full moon and a crescent. It represents a cycle of a period and also that women are guarded by the “moon” the whole time during this process. Sans-serif font added softness to the logotype.

And of course, period.

Packaging & Physical Items

What’s in the kit?

1x reusable heating pad, 3x menstrual pads, 3x cleansing wipes and a note.

“moon.” has two themes that focus on different age groups. The note coming with each theme has different types of information that suits the needs of both teenager and adult females.

The teenager version helps young girls who just entered their puberty know more about their body changes and remain confident.

The adult version talks more about how to deal with menstrual pain or other discomfort during the menstrual period every month while still performing daily tasks.

The pad pouch has a magnet button and is mainly for users to take menstrual supplies to the washroom easily. The hygene problem is strongly addressed during the interviews with potential users. They mentioned the importance to make the pouch easier to use while it’s not convenient to use both hands. And the pain point of using a zipper pouch that can easily catch the packaging of the menstrual pads.

Upon opening the packaging, the inner panel serves as a monthly tracker, featuring bright yellow and orange arrows as the start and end points, offering a striking contrast against the dark background and aiding in menstrual cycle monitoring.

The final product display features two girls standing facing each other, holding hands, while their "guardians" stand behind the clouds. Both themes employ a soothing blue and purple color palette, evoking the tranquility of nighttime. The layers of the clouds symbolize the ebb and flow of the menstrual cycle, mirroring its natural rhythm. The "guardians," represented by heating pads, adopt a more neutral color scheme.

The menstrual cycle is a fundamental aspect of female biology, essential for reproduction and overall health. However, in certain cultures, menstruation is stigmatized, leading to a taboo around discussing it openly. The mission of "moon." is to break this silence and stigma, serving as a constant reminder to women of their inherent power and the importance of caring for their bodies.
